DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInterfaith Wisdom Class with Ted Brownstein & Sheikh Ghassan Manasra\n+\nLive Music from Abed Manasra\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSteps Toward Peacemaking: Anti-War Textures in Torah and Qu’ran\n\nWednesday\, July 19th\, 7:30pm ET\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTed Brownstein\, TAO and AR Board Member\, will be joined by Abed and Ghassan Manasra for Temple Adath Or’s Wednesday Wisdom Class online\, a 90-minute interactive meeting featuring music\, lecture\, and discussion.\n\nTOPIC: Both the Torah and the Qur’an authorize war under certain circumstances. But there are plenty of signs that G-d / Allah was not One who took pleasure in war. The text creates many limitations and warnings. For example\, in this week’s Torah portion\, the Israelites fight the Midianite. Yet when the Israelite soldiers come back victorious to the camp\, they are “unclean.” Instead of the nation holding a big victory celebration for them\, those who took part in the killing must stay outside the camp for seven days to purify themselves and then must bath before then can re-enter society. This is a sign that war and killing in war were not pure in the eyes of G-d\, even in ancient times.\n\nThe future that the Prophets foresee is a time of peace. Swords will be beaten into plows and the meek (not the strongest fighters) will inherit the earth. He has worked in interfaith dialogue and relations for decades in the Holy Land with Yakar and YESODOT in Jerusalem\, Hebrew University\, as a Co-Founder and Co-Director of Anwar Al-Salaam Lights of Peace Society in Nazareth\, and in many programs with the Abrahamic Reunion\, hosting the 2017 Multifaith Iftar Dinner. He is currently a fellow at the Hartman Institute.\n\nRabbi Shraga Bar-On\, Hartman Institute\n\n\nRabbi Dr. Shraga Bar-On is the Director of the Kogod Research Center for Contemporary Jewish Thought and the David Hartman Center for Intellectual Excellence\, and a lecturer of Talmud and Jewish Thought at Shalem College.\n\nAt the David Hartman Center\, he is responsible for the advanced training of aspiring public intellectuals through the Beit Midrash for Israeli Rabbis\, the David Hartman postdoctoral fellowship\, and the Maskilot fellowship for women pursuing their doctorate. His research in Jewish philosophy and identity addresses a wide range of eras and topics: Second Temple literature\, Mishnaic and Talmudic scholarship\, medieval Jewish literature\, early Zionism\, and contemporary Jewish identity. His books and other works have been published in academic\, popular\, and educational contexts.\n\n\n Druze Sheikh Yunes Amasha\n\nSheikh Amasha\, a native of the town of Ussefiya in the north of Israel\, is a Druze religious leader. As Imam of his community\, Sheikh Amasha is responsible for conducting religious rituals. He is also a member of the Supreme Druze Religious Council in Israel\, headed by spiritual leader Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif.\n\nSheikh Amasha\, one of the Druze members of Beit Morasha’s Municipal Forum for Interfaith Leaders from Mixed Cities\, has now been appointed to the important position of Forum Coordinator.\n\n\n\n\n\nAsked why he had originally joined the Forum\, Sheikh Yunes replied: “The Druze are a peace-loving people\, favoring any initiative that promotes relations based on tolerance\, understanding and acceptance of others. Personally\, having lived all my life in a mixed town\, and often working with members of other communities\, I have come to know Israelis from all ethnicities. Always regarding them as my brothers and sisters in humanity\, I understand the great importance of preserving good relations between the different faiths.”\n\nSheikh Amasha believes that the Municipal Forum for Interfaith Leaders from Mixed Cities serves a critical function: its members become acquainted with each other’s faiths and customs\, and also learn from one another’s experience as faith leaders\, especially in addressing the burning issues of present-day Israeli society.\n\nFinally\, Sheikh Amasha asserts that “The Forum serves as an example for members of all ethnic groups\, demonstrating that despite our different faiths\, we can all live together in peace and brotherhood.”\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLana Shukha Nseir\, AR Women’s Peacebuilding Program\n\nI live in Nazareth where I am an elementary school teacher and I am also a member at the Greek Orthodox Community Council.  I have been in many projects with the Abraham Reunion organization\, for many long years\, and recently I am part of the beginning of a new project for educators.\n\n\n\n \nHanan Halabi\, AR Young Peacebuilder\n\nHanan is 19 years old\, from Daliat-Al Carmel in the North of Israel\, and a member of the Druze faith community. She is one of the young leaders of the interfaith movement in the Holy Land\, and she began walking this way of peace in high school. Born in Jerusalem\, she serves the community of Nigun Halev in the Jezreel Valley. She is committed to promoting dialogue\, friendship and respect in the Holy Land. Rabbi Leora is married to Amit and has three sons.\n \n \n\nAbed Manasra\nSheikh Abed Alsalam Manasra is the Israeli Programs Director for the Abrahamic Reunion. He is an ordained Sheikh in the Tariqat Qadriyya As-Salaam (Qadiri Sufi Order Of Peace in the Holy Land)\, in which his father is also a Sheikh\, and his Grandfather\, Abdelsalam Manasra\, is the Head Sheikh. He is a musician\, performing classical Arabic and Sufi music and hymns with his wife\, and works with young adults and youth to organize interfaith dialogue and gatherings in and around Nazareth. Abed@abrahamicreunion.org\n \nMalkon Marizian\nIs an Armenian Christian youth peacebuilder from East Jerusalem\, who helps the AR as a translator for many events\, and is a longtime participant in the Abrahamic Reunion. Studied for an MSc in Human Rights from London School of Economics and Political Sciences\, and has worked in projects helping Palestinian and Syrian refugees\n \nRabbi David Zaslow\nServes as Rabbi of Havurah Shir Hadash in Ashland\, Oregon\, where he has hosted Sheikh Ghassan Manasra of the Abrahamic Reunion. Rabbi David Zaslow was born in Brooklyn\, New York in 1947. He was ordained in 1995 by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi under the supervision and mentorship of Rabbi Aryeh Hirschfield. In the summer of 1996 he became spiritual leader of the Havurah\, which was founded in June 1985. In 2003 he completed his term as a Spiritual Advisor to ALEPH\, the umbrella organization of the Jewish Renewal movement. He is a longstanding interfaith advocate and leader.  \nNobar Voskerijan\nNobar Voskerjian\, a music artist from Bethlehem\, holds a Master’s in Music Education from Hebrew University of Jerusalem\, and is a professor of music at the Armenian School in Jerusalem and Dar al-Kalima School in Bethlehem. He also work as a music therapist for people with special needs.\n \n \n\nRimon Sabbagh\nRimon is a Christian Palestinian from Ramallah. He is graduated from Bir Zeit University studying Political Science and International Relations\, and is one of the members and founders of the Greek Catholic Youth Movement in Ramallah. He is engaged in the peace and cultural activities movements\, is a part of the Abrahamic Reunion’s Cultural Leaders in Peace Training (Youth Cohort) and is a musician.\n \n \nHOSTS: \n \nSheikh Ghassan Manasra\, International Director of the Abrahamic Reunion\, oversees programming in the Holy Land and Internationally since 2015. He was one of the Abrahamic Reunion’s Co-Coordinators in the Holy Land from 2014-2015\, before moving to the US with his family\, and has been an active contributing Peacemaker with the AR for more than a decade. He is an ordained Sheikh in the Qadiri Sufi Order in the Holy Land\, and son of Sheikh Abdel Salaam Manasra – head of the Qadiri Sufi Order in the Holy Land. He is the founder of Anwar-Il-Salaam\, the Lights of Peace Center in Nazareth\, and is Director\, Islamic Cultural Center in Nazareth. Ghassan is an expert and lectures in Islam\, Islamic history\, Sufism\, and contemporary Muslim issues in the Middle East\, Europe\, and the USA. Ghassan@abrahamicreunion.org\n \nDavid Less is a global teacher of meditation\, conflict resolution and inter-faith dialog of over forty years. For over a decade he has been the Global Dean of the Universal Worship\, an organization in over thirty countries\,that honors the commonality in all religions and appreciates and respects the differences. He started promoting understanding rather than blame as a path to peace in the Holy Land in 2000 and was one of the founders of the Abrahamic Reunion shortly thereafter.

DESCRIPTION:Building Bridges\, Dissolving Walls \n\nRegister (Free!) via Eventbrite\nCome hear from the next generation of multifaith peacebuilders in Palestine and Israel!\nFeaturing Live Music from Young Peacebuilders\, a short video from the Parliament Of Religions 2021 Young Peacebuilders Program\, Discussion\, and Q & A with the Young Peacebuilders.\nThese young women and men–Muslim\, Jewish\, Christian\, and Druze– have chosen to create heart-felt interreligious connections among themselves. Born into decades of conflict and a climate of growing division\, extremism\, and violence\, these young\, courageous\, and contemplative Muslim\, Jewish\, Christian\, and Druze men and women are choosing to create heart-felt interreligious connections amongst themselves. They believe in loving their neighbor (Christian Bible)\, that the purpose of human diversity is to “know one another” as human beings (Quran)\, and that if one life is saved it is as if all lives were saved (Talmud). They have spent the pandemic learning from the first generation of Abrahamic Reunion peacebuilders (cir. 2004) in multi-religious text studies and meetings online. \nBorn into decades of conflict and a climate of growing division\, extremism\, and violence\, these courageous and contemplative young men and women are choosing to create heart-felt interreligious connections with one another as human beings.  Without any political agenda\, these young Peacemakers visit each other’s holy spaces\, trade stories\, and connect the common threads between their religions and cultures to restore the Abrahamic roots that support understanding\, healing\, trust\, and a peaceful and balanced Palestinian-Israeli society. \nPlease join us for a panel presentation from these young leaders to hear why and how they continue to embrace each other and to wage peace. \nBIOS \nSHAHED BAGDADI \nShahed was born into a peace family and has been part of the interfaith movement since she was a baby. She lives in Nazareth\, Israel\, and is 20 years old. She is one of the young leaders of the interfaith movement in the Holy Land\, and has participated in Abrahamic Reunion Young Peacebuilders trainings\, peace activities\, summits\, workshops and events. \nHANAN HALABI \nHanan is 19 years old\, from Daliat-Al Carmel in the North of Israel\, and a member of the Druze faith community. She is one of the young leaders of the interfaith movement in the Holy Land\, and she began walking this way of peace in high school. I live in the Negev desert\, in a small town called Yeruham. In recent years\, I have been active in promoting cooperation between Jews and Muslims\, especially between the Bedouin communities and the Jews of the Negev. I am also a student for MA government in IDC Herzliya\, and I hope to make an impact in the field of coexistence in the Negev.I believe that peace is the most complex issue I can imagine\, but also the simplest thing in the world. A place where there is peace\, seems to me like a person who has woken from a deep sleep.  \nABED MANASRA\, AR Israeli Director \nSheikh Abed Alsalam Manasra is the son of Sheikh Ghassan Manasra. She is a Coordinator of the TRUST WIN\, a member of the  Women’s Parliament and various orgaizations for dialogue and understanding between the cultures\, and for the advancement of women and social issues affecting women.  She is a Druze spokeswoman representing Druze women in national forums.\n\nSheikha Umm Bra’a Najah Kabaha\nSheikha Najah ​is a leader in the Muslim community who lives in the city of Nazareth\, the largest Arab city in Israel. She has worked for interfaith understanding and dialogue through the Qadiri Tariqat as-Salaam\, the Lights of Peace Society\, and the Abrahamic Reunion for many years. She also teaches children and early childhood. \n\n\nFather Firas Diab\nPalestinian Pastor of St. George’s Greek Melkite Church\nFather Firas Diab is the Pastor of St. George Melkite Greek Catholic Church in Zababdeh\, a Palestinian village in the northern West Bank\, and is the grandson of St George’s previous pastor. He has degrees in Philosophy and Theology\, and is often actively building connections either with Western Churches or for solidarity within the Palestinian nation. He is a very active peacemaker with Abrahamic Reunion and has been part of many events including as a leader in the Multifaith Peace March in Bethlehem in 2019. \n\nZeynab Manasra Khatib\nAR Youth Leader \nZeynab is an Abrahamic Reunion Youth Leader from Nazareth\, Israel. She is Muslim and grew up steeped in a culture of peacemaking\, multi-faith dialogue\, and bridge-building across cultures\, identities\, and religions\, participating in the programs of her father Sheikh Ghassan Manasra and learning the art of facilitation from him from an early age. She has been part of programs through her High School\, The Sulha Project\, Jerusalem Peacemakers\, Lights of Peace Society of Nazareth\, Abrahamic Reunion\, and other multifaith projects for the last ten years. She is passionate about working with other youth and young adults\, and has traveled with the AR to speak at events and presentations in the UK\, Germany\, Israel\, and the US. \nRabbi David Zaslow\nServes as Rabbi of Havurah Shir Hadash in Ashland\, Oregon\, where he has hosted Sheikh Ghassan Manasra of the Abrahamic Reunion. Rabbi David Zaslow was born in Brooklyn\, New York in 1947. He was ordained in 1995 by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi under the supervision and mentorship of Rabbi Aryeh Hirschfield. In the summer of 1996 he became spiritual leader of the Havurah\, which was founded in June 1985. In 2003 he completed his term as a Spiritual Advisor to ALEPH\, the umbrella organization of the Jewish Renewal movement. He is a longstanding interfaith advocate and leader.\n  \n \nSheikh Ghassan Manasra\nAbrahamic Reunion International Director \n\n\nSheikh Ghassan Manasra was one of the Abrahamic Reunion’s Co-Coordinators in the Holy Land until moving to the US in 2015\, and has been an active contributing Peacemaker with the AR for more than a decade. He is an ordained Sheikh in the Qadiri Sufi Order in the Holy Land\, and son of Sheikh Abdel Salaam Manasra – head of the Qadiri Sufi Order in the Holy Land. He is the founder of Anwar-Il-Salaam\, the Lights of Peace Center in Nazareth\, and  is Director\, Islamic Cultural Center in Nazareth.
