He has spent the last 50 years sharing the great tradition of vocal jazz interpretation and improvisation with audiences throughout the world. He has performed and recorded with as well as opened for some of the greatest of America’s Jazz and R&B Icons\, Joe Williams\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Miles Davis\, Chick Corea\, Cedar Walton\, Ramsey Lewis\, Joe Zawinul\, Aretha Franklin\, George Benson\, Richard Elliot\, Patti LaBelle\, just to name a few. He is rooted in the ancient vocal practices of melodic narrative and has been nurtured by masters of the West African oral traditions. He has likewise spent a lifetime studying and performing this great American treasure\, Jazz! He cherishes the joy of makin’ music and states it with a smile on his face during every performance\, thrilling audiences of all kinds around the world! Fred believes that Music heals and  touches the world\, one heart at a time. “What greater gift than to be a part of creating these experiences for humanity.\, Fred Johnson”\n\nBarbara Schmitz studied writing at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics where she was Allen Ginsberg’s apprentice. She taught writing and literature at Northeast College for thirty years\, founded and coordinated the Visiting Writer’s Series there. Two of her five volumes of poetry have won the Nebraska Center for the Writer awards. Her latest Just Outside was published by Sandhills Press in 2019. Sundown at Faith Regional is forthcoming from Pinyon which published her memoir Path of Lightning: A Seeker’s Jagged Journey about spiritual practice\, relationship and travel with her Sufi guide to India\, Turkey\, Bali\, and Jerusalem. She lives on Highway 81 with husband Bob writing to the rhythms of the Highway River and practicing meditation. \nBayati Music Ensemble \nBayati performs classical Arabic and Middle Eastern Music\, based in Kansas City\, MO. \n\n  \n  \n  \nRabbi David Zaslow\nServes as Rabbi of Havurah Shir Hadash in Ashland\, Oregon\, where he has hosted Sheikh Ghassan Manasra of the Abrahamic Reunion. Rabbi David Zaslow was born in Brooklyn\, New York in 1947. He was ordained in 1995 by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi under the supervision and mentorship of Rabbi Aryeh Hirschfield. In the summer of 1996 he became spiritual leader of the Havurah\, which was founded in June 1985. In 2003 he completed his term as a Spiritual Advisor to ALEPH\, the umbrella organization of the Jewish Renewal movement. He is a longstanding interfaith advocate and leader.\nAbed Alsalam Manasra\nSheikh Abd alsalam Manasra is Interreligious Dialogue Lecturer for Rising Tide International in Sarasota\, FL\, the Israeli Programs Manager for the Abrahamic Reunion\, and an ordained Sheikh in the Tariqat Qadriyya As-Salaam (Qadiri Sufi Order Of Peace). He is also a musician and actively organizes interfaith dialogue and gatherings for youth and young adults in and around Nazareth and across the Holy Land\, and interfaith programs in Sarasota FL and internationally. \nSheikh Ghassan Manasra\nSheikh Ghassan Manasra is an ordained Sheikh in the Qadiri Sufi Order in the Holy Land\, and son of Sheikh Abdel Salaam Manasra – head of the Qadiri Sufi Order in the Holy Land. He is the founder of Anwar-Il-Salaam\, the Lights of Peace Center in Nazareth\, and Director of Islamic Cultural Center in Nazareth. He is International Executive Director of Abrahamic Union. \nGhassan is an expert and lectures in Islam\, Islamic history\, Sufism\, and contemporary Muslim issues in the Middle East\, Europe\, and the USA. He is married to daughter of late Sheikh Baghdadi\, renowned Muslim leader\, and Holy Land facilitator in interfaith dialogue projects. Ghassan has received multiple awards and accolades for his peacemaking\, including most recently the 2014 “Outstanding Leader in Interreligious Dialogue Award” from the Dialogue Institute at Temple University. \nDavid Less\nDavid Less is a global meditation teacher\, author\, and peacemaker known for his decades of work in interfaith dialogue and conflict resolution. A lifelong practitioner of Sufism\, he is a co-founder and current chairman of the Abrahamic Reunion\, a non-profit dedicated to peacebuilding in the Holy Land.

In the early 1980’s he led The Vancouver Sufi Choir and recorded (with Aziza Cooper) a groundbreaking collection of chants and songs from the world’s many religious traditions. In 1985\, Amir founded and conducted The Universal Gospel Choir\, a powerhouse interfaith vocal ensemble that just celebrated its 40th anniversary. He has produced two highly acclaimed albums of his own contemporary Sufi Music (‘Merhaba’ and his collection of musical settings of Rumi poetry ‘Opener of Wings’ with The Keemia Ensemble)\, and led hundreds of spiritual music events and “Universal Kirtans”\, an interfaith approach to Kirtan chanting and group singing. \nSura Charlier + Steven Thrush\nSura has over 45 years of experience as a professional performer\, arranger\, composer\, private teacher\, music director\, and recording artist skilled in the styles of classical\, jazz\, blues\, Latin\, gospel\, R & B\, flamenco\, show music\, pop\, and sacred music (classical through contemporary.)  Credits include membership in the Roadside Attraction Big Band\, (including the Duke Ellington Sacred Concert\, Gig Harbor and Bellevue Jazz Festivals)\, pit orchestras for touring broadway shows\, the Village Theater\, Civic Light Opera\, Shoreline Community College\, Broadway Bound Children’s Theater\, and performances with the Seattle Philharmonic\, the Federal Way Symphony\, the Federal Way Swing Band\, the Seattle Seahawks Band\, Lynyrd Skynyrd \, Arthur Duncan\, and La Peña Flamenca de Seattle.  Sura was a founding member of the Cascade Jazz Quintet\, performing in multimedia concerts of poetry\, nature photography\, original live music\, and dance. This project envisions the turning from global militarism to global peacebuilding.  Rabbi Yitz is an accomplished musician playing cello\, guitar\, composing and recording his songs. \nPRESENTERS\nJack Kornfield\n\nJack trained as a Buddhist monk in the monasteries of Thailand\, India and Burma. He has taught meditation internationally since 1974 and is one of the key teachers to introduce Buddhist mindfulness practice to the West. He is a founding teacher of the Insight Meditation Society and Spirit Rock Meditation Center. He holds a PhD in clinical psychology\, and is a father\, husband\, and activist. Fasting is a sacred practice in the Abrahamic Faith traditions\, which will be explored and discussed at our online program. In the Holy Land\, the Ramadan fast is 14 hrs long\, so\, after dinner in the US\, if you refrain from eating or drinking\, and skip breakfast\, you can break the fast with us having fasted about the same amount of time. \n\nRamadan Fast Times:\n\nJerusalem: 4:51am – 7:10pm (14hrs\, 19min)\nSarasota: 6:07am – 7:52pm (13hrs\, 45min)\n14hrs prior to 12:10pm EDT = 10:10pm EDT.\n\n\n\nWhat to bring: Dates & Water \nWhether or not you are fasting\, you are invited to bring water and dried dates for the symbolic breaking of the fast\, together. Dates and water are commonly the first items consumed to break the fast in the Holy Land\, providing much needed hydration\, and a burst of sugars to reanimate the organs of the body. \nFasting is a way to be in connection with the Abrahamic connections to fasting\, and to be in connection with those who don’t have enough food to eat\, who are fasting because of famine\, starvation\, lack of aid\, etc\, as in Gaza and in many places around the world. \nThe practice of fasting is traditionally seen as a way of becoming closer to God\, to the spirit\, and further from materiality\, corporeality. It is a practice seen in many traditions outside the Abrahamic Faiths as well\, a a means of purification of body\, mind\, and heart. \n(Muslims outside the Holy Land – we will be symbolically breaking the fast at the Iftar time in the Holy Land\, so of course\, we understand you won’t break fast with us together.)

It’s because we are connected on so many different levels and feel each other’s distress deeply. This is why we can lighten the world’s burden by praying for peace and performing actions – both symbolic and substantial in their hopefulness – to promote peace. We can emphasize the power of peace by focusing on peace and amplifying its impact by coming together to call for peace.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Roots\n\n\n\n\nThe Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere is traditionally a time for welcoming back the light. Winter Solstice: honoring the Return of Light.   \nIt is also a time of specific observances in various religious traditions\, including Hannukah (Dec. 7-15 2023)\, Christmas (Dec. 25\, 2023)\, Bodhi Day (Dec. 8\, 2023) and Yalda Night (Dec. 20-21) in Iran and other parts of Central Asia.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAction Needed\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese actions would focus only on peace\, eschewing politics and the taking of sides.  \n\n\n\n\n1\n\n\n\n\nTo reach out to religious community leaders to ask for their support. To request religious leaders to encourage their congregations to hold services for peace on Dec. 22\, 2023.  As it is a Friday\, mosques and synagogues will be holding services anyway.  We would encourage the addition of a special Friday service for Christians and the holding of special services in Hindu and Buddhist temples and Sikh gurdwaras. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2\n\n\n\n\nTo invite communities worldwide to hold an event promoting peace on Dec. 22\, the day that heralds the return of the light in the Northern Hemisphere. The event could take be in any form –  a religious service\, a concert\, a reading\, a moment of communal silence\, \n\n\n\n\n3\n\n\n\n\nTo encourage people to place a candle in their window to promote peace on the night of Dec. 21-21 as a symbol of the presence of peace and to encourage the promotion of peace. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Goal\n\n\n\n\nTo ignite the light of peace in the hearts of participants and to encourage the spread of peace at a time of increasing conflict and violence.

But there are plenty of signs that G-d / Allah was not One who took pleasure in war. The text creates many limitations and warnings. For example\, in this week’s Torah portion\, the Israelites fight the Midianite. Yet when the Israelite soldiers come back victorious to the camp\, they are “unclean.” Instead of the nation holding a big victory celebration for them\, those who took part in the killing must stay outside the camp for seven days to purify themselves and then must bath before then can re-enter society. This is a sign that war and killing in war were not pure in the eyes of G-d\, even in ancient times.\n\nThe future that the Prophets foresee is a time of peace. Swords will be beaten into plows and the meek (not the strongest fighters) will inherit the earth. He has worked in interfaith dialogue and relations for decades in the Holy Land with Yakar and YESODOT in Jerusalem\, Hebrew University\, as a Co-Founder and Co-Director of Anwar Al-Salaam Lights of Peace Society in Nazareth\, and in many programs with the Abrahamic Reunion\, hosting the 2017 Multifaith Iftar Dinner. He is currently a fellow at the Hartman Institute.\n\nRabbi Shraga Bar-On\, Hartman Institute\n\n\nRabbi Dr. Shraga Bar-On is the Director of the Kogod Research Center for Contemporary Jewish Thought and the David Hartman Center for Intellectual Excellence\, and a lecturer of Talmud and Jewish Thought at Shalem College.\n\nAt the David Hartman Center\, he is responsible for the advanced training of aspiring public intellectuals through the Beit Midrash for Israeli Rabbis\, the David Hartman postdoctoral fellowship\, and the Maskilot fellowship for women pursuing their doctorate. His research in Jewish philosophy and identity addresses a wide range of eras and topics: Second Temple literature\, Mishnaic and Talmudic scholarship\, medieval Jewish literature\, early Zionism\, and contemporary Jewish identity. His books and other works have been published in academic\, popular\, and educational contexts.\n\n\n Druze Sheikh Yunes Amasha\n\nSheikh Amasha\, a native of the town of Ussefiya in the north of Israel\, is a Druze religious leader. As Imam of his community\, Sheikh Amasha is responsible for conducting religious rituals. He is also a member of the Supreme Druze Religious Council in Israel\, headed by spiritual leader Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif.\n\nSheikh Amasha\, one of the Druze members of Beit Morasha’s Municipal Forum for Interfaith Leaders from Mixed Cities\, has now been appointed to the important position of Forum Coordinator.\n\n\n\n\n\nAsked why he had originally joined the Forum\, Sheikh Yunes replied: “The Druze are a peace-loving people\, favoring any initiative that promotes relations based on tolerance\, understanding and acceptance of others. Personally\, having lived all my life in a mixed town\, and often working with members of other communities\, I have come to know Israelis from all ethnicities. Always regarding them as my brothers and sisters in humanity\, I understand the great importance of preserving good relations between the different faiths.”\n\nSheikh Amasha believes that the Municipal Forum for Interfaith Leaders from Mixed Cities serves a critical function: its members become acquainted with each other’s faiths and customs\, and also learn from one another’s experience as faith leaders\, especially in addressing the burning issues of present-day Israeli society.\n\nFinally\, Sheikh Amasha asserts that “The Forum serves as an example for members of all ethnic groups\, demonstrating that despite our different faiths\, we can all live together in peace and brotherhood.”\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLana Shukha Nseir\, AR Women’s Peacebuilding Program\n\nI live in Nazareth where I am an elementary school teacher and I am also a member at the Greek Orthodox Community Council.  I have been in many projects with the Abraham Reunion organization\, for many long years\, and recently I am part of the beginning of a new project for educators.\n\n\n\n \nHanan Halabi\, AR Young Peacebuilder\n\nHanan is 19 years old\, from Daliat-Al Carmel in the North of Israel\, and a member of the Druze faith community. She is one of the young leaders of the interfaith movement in the Holy Land\, and she began walking this way of peace in high school.
